October 2011 Ojai Valley School's Kindergarten Global
Fund Raiser Stories for Africa In addition to providing curriculum, materials, and education to the creches
in the farming communities of South Africa, we are now going to provide the children with a library of children's books. This
year, the Ojai Valley School's kindergarten class collected gently used or new children's picture books and chapter
books to stock libraries and classrooms in the creches of Philippi and Wellington, South Africa. Our goal was
2,000 books. Within three weeks, we collected over 3400 books. In June, the books were shipped to Cape Town. Here in
America, the cost of children's books are reasonable and affordable. In South Africa a book that would cost
us $4.99 is rand 49.95 (equivalent to our dollars). We also wish to provide each child with a gift of a book or two to
keep at home. Also, we will strive to stock the libraries of books that are written in Xhosa and Afrikaans. Many thanks to Maryellen McEachen, Brian Reekie, Lisa Gordon, Ely and Jessica Neiderhiser, and the Ojai
Valley School for funding the shipping of the books.
